We have discovered that certain versions of Windows has trouble getting an internet connection via the AT&T U-Verse RG 3801 HGV Residential Gateway. It took our Engineers many hours to figure this mess out! And with No help from AT&T!
The symptoms are as follows:
When rebooting or cold starting the Windows PC the internet was not available only a local connection to RG 3801 HGV. This would happen 99.7% of the time. It did not matter if the connection type from the PC was Ethernet, Wireless, static, or DHCP. This was a real issue and pain to say the least.
I am sure many Windows users have the same problem and no way to solve the problem. All AT&T could offer; was to get a newer Windows OS and or newer computer! Really! What kind of answer was that? People pay good money each month for internet service from AT&T U-Verse and that is the best their TIER 2 Tech support could offer up?
We have the fix for you, just follow these steps:
Get a pencil & paper ready!
Using any web browser, Login to the RG 3801 HGV:
Click the “Settings” TAB
Now Click the “Broadband” TAB, the following will be displayed:
We have marked the above image with two (2) red arrows, simply write down the complete primary DNS IP Address and the Secondary DNS IP Address on the paper you provided above.
You can now shut-down the web browser connection to the RG 3801 HGV.
Next we need to modify the DNS settings for your wireless or ethernet connection in Windows. Please see the diagram below for the proper settings:
Notice we have set the DNS Settings for our Windows Network to use the same DNS Servers that the RG 3801 HGV uses.
Of course your DNS IP Addresses for the Primary and Secondary will be different for the general area you are located in, but if you copied the two (2) Addresses correctly from the RG 3801 HGV, then you should be able to enter them in your windows local network or wireless network settings under IPV4 Proprieties.
Important to note, it is ok to obtain an IP Address Automatically, but make sure you check “Use the following DNS server addresses” and then fill-in the ip addresses you wrote down.
Now click Ok and your settings will be saved! That’s it, now windows can access the internet instantly after a cold boot or restart!
